Description
The Masseria Pernice is the property of a family of Sicilian aristocrats and lies on a 135 hectare estate of vineyards, olive groves and pastureland.
The farmhouse, or baglio, was built at the beginning of the 20th century and has a classic Sicilian-style internal courtyard. The four apartments facing the main farmhouse were used by workers during the grape and olive harvests and have been restored according to the principals of bio-architecture, and decorated with family heirlooms, Sicilian ceramics and antique prints.
The baglio retains its traditional cobbles, and its pale pink walls are covered with bougainvillea, jasmine, roses and geraniums, creating an atmosphere which is at the same time simple, welcoming and peaceful. There is a salone – open to all guests -- created within what was once the granary. From here, you pass into a splendid garden set against hills covered with pines and eucalypti, where you will find a large swimming pool (14m x 7m) where you can keep cool in the heat of the summer, as well as a shady patio and an area for barbeques.

Masseria Pernice is conveniently located for visiting Palermo, and for those interested in discovering the artistic, natural and archeological heritage of the area.
Monreale, with its magnficent Norman cathedral is just 33 km (15 min) away.
Segesta, with its imposing Doric temple – and fabulous views right down to the sea -- is 41 km away. In summer there is a series of concerts and plays held in the temple.
The long, sandy beach of Balestrate is also close by, with stretches of free sands as well as Lidos for those who seek more comforts.
The nearby town of San Giuseppe Jato, which takes its name from the river that runs through the valley to the sea, was founded by an ancestor of the proprietor. Archaeological explorations by the University of Zurich have uncovered Greek and Roman remains of an agora, an amphitheatre, a temple to Athena and a house with court yard.
An hour’s drive will take you to Selinunte (57km), with the most extensive archeological park in Europe, and magnficient and unspoilt beaches in the Riserva del Belice. There are also several restaurants renowned for their excellent fish and seafood.
The curious might also want to visit Piana degli Albanesi, an ancient community of arbëreshë or Albanians, who retain their Greek orthadox religion, traditions and language. The most interesting time to visit is in Holy Week, when you can see locals taking part in the religious celebrations dressed in ancient costume that have been handed down over centuries.
