Description

Villa Le Cave takes its name from three small tufa quarries – of which there are many on this island – that lie within ahuge (about 1.5 hectare) Meditetrranean rock garden full of palms, olive trees and cacti.
There are few villas on Favignana as elegantly constructed and tastefully furnished as this one. It consists of two separate buildings, one with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the other with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The two buildings are connected by two large covered and furnished patios, from which there are views of the incredibile crystal-clear sea, and of sunsets behind the island’s castle-topped mountain. The villa lies a ten-minute walk from Cala Rossa, whose waters are considered among the most beautiful on the island.

Surroundings

Favignana is the biggest island of the Egadi archipelago, and its tufa-landscape, eroded by sea, rain and wind, is one of the most fascinating in Italy. There are numerous enchanting beaches, such as Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Lido Burrone and Calazza, all of them easy to reach along either tarmac-ed or unmettalled roads. The sea is uncontaminated and of an extraordinary beauty, azure where the sea-bed is sand, indigo above the swaying fields of the sea-weed, posidonia.
The town too is fascinating, dominated by the fortresses of Santa Caterina and San Giacomo, and by the magnificent early 20th century buildings belonging to the Florio tuna-processing plant, which have recently been reconstructed. Tuna is the mainstay of Favignana, and every May, the famous Mattanza, or tuna-slaughter, takes place in its waters.
Florio is still one of the most important companies in Europe for the processing and canning of tuna, and the island has a rich cuisine based on fish, witness to the richness of its sea. Sea urchins are served as an antipasto, or with pasta; cernia (grouper) comes baked, grilled or braised; tuna is served grilled, or cooked in a sweet-sour agrodolce sauce, as polpette (balls of tuna, breadcrumbs, herbs, fried, or simmered in a tomato sauce), as involtini (wrapped around a filling of breadcrumbs, cheese and herbs), raw, braised, or with potatoes. The island is also known for its fish couscous, and for its small, flavoursome patelle – shellfish collected from the rocks.
The other two islands of the archipelago, Marettimo and Levanzo are also worth visiting for their rocky coastlines, fabulous seas and fascinating villages. Levanzo is also home to a cave with prehistoric rock paintings.
All the islands form part of a natural marine reserve set up to safeguard their unpolluted sea.
