Il Mirto is a 15th-century castle that was passed down to the present owners thanks to a document signed by one of their ancestors, a one-time notary to the King..
Although the castle, sited on a hill in the little village of Venetico Superiore, has been modified numerous times over the centuries, it still retains many original features and fittings. Last remodelled in the 1970s, the spacious reception area is furnished with pieces from the family collection in Palermo, giving it the atmosphere of a noble house from the time of Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous Sicilian novel, The Leopard. Most of the ground-floor rooms give onto a large furnished terrace from which there are fantastic views over the sea to the Aeolian Islands. The bedrooms are all on the upper floor, reached via an exquisite staircase. The roof of the villa forms an enormous sun terrace. There is also a gorgeous garden with an excellent swimming pool.

Surroundings
Given the proximity of the port of Milazzo, it is very easy to organise excursions (for the day or for longer) to the Aeolian Islands, by either public transport or an organised boat trip.
Although Milazzo is a largely modern port, overlooked by an oil refinery, it has a fascinating old walled town, the Borgo. There are also two long beaches, one stony (Ponente) the other sandy (Levante), though it has to be said they are not the most beautiful Sicily has to offer. You can make wonderful excursions to the coastal reserve of Marinello, where there are unspoilt sandy dunes and natural salt-lakes, as well as discovering the architectural and gastronomic secretes of the Nebrodi mountains.
